Is it riba?

Is working in a bank haram?

The Prophet cursed the one who consumes riba, the one who pays it, the one who writes it down and its two witnesses, and said they are all alike (Sahih Muslim 1598). So a job is judged by what you do in it: work that directly handles interest is not allowed, and roles with no hand in it are disputed.

Jobs that directly involve interest

Arranging, approving, selling, recording, calculating or signing interest-bearing loans and deposits is taking part in riba. That covers roles such as loan officer, mortgage adviser, a cashier who handles interest transactions and a manager who oversees lending. These are not allowed. The Qur’an says: “Do not help one another in sin and aggression” (al-Ma’idah 5:2), and Hanafi fatwas apply the hadith above to them.

Roles with no hand in interest

Security, cleaning, catering and IT work that involves no interest calculation are disputed. Some Hanafi fatwa bodies hold that such work is not haram in itself, though better avoided; others forbid any bank job, because the pay comes from a business built on interest. If you can choose, choose other work. For your own role, ask a scholar personally.

Islamic banks

Work at an Islamic bank or Islamic window whose contracts follow the rules in this guidance, such as murabaha, ijara and profit sharing, is not the same question. Check that the contracts are genuine and overseen by a Shari’ah board.

If you already work in such a job

Look for halal work and move once you find it. How and when to leave depends on your circumstances and responsibilities, so ask a scholar personally.
